Inspired by loss and fueled by hope, our mission is to actively encourage and help fire departments, along with their firefighters, establish safer practices to reduce harmful exposures that can lead to a cancer diagnosis. All funds raised by The Phoenix Project 780 are purposefully used to make a difference in the lives of the firefighters through cancer awareness and prevention.

Our Story

Have you ever had a night where you cannot sleep, and your brain just won’t shut off?  You know the ones where every conversation you had that day is playing on repeat?  Every article you have read is burned into your eyes and it’s all you see?  It was in the middle of one of those nights that The Phoenix Project 780 was born.
Walking out of a doctor’s office with a probable diagnosis of cancer is hard.  Monday evening on May 9th, 2022, we did just that, and that day changed our life forever.

Raising Awareness

Firefighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service. In this 4-part series spearheaded by Wake County Fire Services and Emergency Managment, you’ll hear from real local firefighters about their early days in the Fire Service, and how common it was for firefighters to be exposed to toxic chemicals and carcinogens.  You will hear about the links between firefighting and the increased risk of many types of cancers.  The story of firefighter cancer awareness can’t be told without those whose lives have been forever changed by a diagnosis, so you’ll hear heartfelt testimonial from those most impacted by firefighter occupational cancer. And you will hear about some of the positive changes happening in the fire service today.  By spreading awareness and advocating for better preventative measures, departments can apply the best practices to better protect firefighters from occupational cancer hazards and ultimately, save lives.
A special thanks to Wake County Fire Services and Emergency Management for their efforts to increases awareness.

Would your Family be Prepared?

For first responder family members, the fear of a loved one never coming home is real and is something that is thought about every single day.

PHOENIX RISING GRANT INITIATIVE

To continue Nathan’s legacy, The Phoenix Project 780 has made it our mission to raise awareness of firefighter occupational cancer.  No firefighter should have to fight occupational cancer as a result of their career. To help mitigate exposure levels firefighters are exposed to, we have created the Phoenix Rising Initiative. The Phoenix Rising Initiative will select one volunteer or small municipal fire department each month to receive a Phoenix Rising package.

DEPARTMENTS CAN TAKE PREVENTATIVE STEPS TO REDUCE EXPOSURE INCIDENTS

Today, cancer is the leading cause of death among active and retired fire fighters combined.
